Safety notices

Recalls: riding helmets, vests, saddles and stirrups.

Consumer safety regulators publish recalls when a product fails its standard or can break. This page lists the equestrian recalls our research found, with the regulator, the date and the stated reason. It is not a complete list.

Get instruction

This page explains what governing bodies, standards bodies and veterinary bodies publish. It is not a substitute for instruction from a qualified coach or riding school, and it does not replace medical or veterinary advice.

Check the regulator

This page reports recalls as the regulators published them on the dates shown. It is not a complete or current list. The regulator's own recall database, and the maker, are where to check whether a particular product is affected and what the remedy is.

Helmets

Ovation Protege helmets (United States and Canada, February 2023)

In a recall announced by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (recall 23-116, 9 February 2023), the importer named in the notice, English Riding Supply LLC, recalled Ovation Protege equestrian helmets made from December 2020 to December 2022, because they fail to meet the impact requirements of ASTM F1163-15. The CPSC gives about 49,300 units in the US and about 5,270 in Canada, and reported no incidents. The remedy offered was a refund or a replacement. Health Canada published the same recall the same day, naming models 467716, 469566 and 469766 and stating that no incidents had been reported in Canada or the US as of 24 January 2023.

The unit count is given two ways. The CPSC's figures are about 49,300 in the US plus 5,270 in Canada. Some reports, including one by Nancy Jaffer seen in a search summary, give about 55,000 helmets, which appears to be the two numbers combined.

Fouganza New Horse Riding Helmet 100 (Ireland, June 2026)

Ireland's Competition and Consumer Protection Commission published on 9 June 2026 a recall by Decathlon, the company the notice names as carrying out the recall, of the Fouganza New Horse Riding Helmet 100, models 8844101, 8644620, 8644618 and 8644619, all sizes. The stated reason is that the strap in front of the ear can slip backwards, which reduces the helmet's stability and protection. The remedy is a refund through a Decathlon store.

Reports we could not confirm

  • A search summary describes a voluntary recall by Charles Owen of a limited-edition 4Star cross-country helmet with a chrome buckle, over corrosion of the buckle, in a notice hosted by the Safety Equipment Institute. The notice page no longer opened, and we could not confirm the date.
  • Product Safety Australia has a notice about equestrian helmets that did not meet performance requirements for penetration, shock absorption or both. The page refused our request, so the product and date are unconfirmed.

Body protectors and air jackets

Titan and Verus riding vests (United Kingdom, 2022)

A notice from the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards dated 18 May 2022, republished by the London Borough of Bromley, covered Horze Titan and Verus riding vests in children's and adults' sizes. They failed the shock absorption tests of EN 13158:2018, exceeding the thresholds two to three times. The notice says Horze withdrew the vests from the market in February 2022 and recalled the vests from end users. The body protectors page explains EN 13158.

A report we could not confirm

Horse & Hound, seen only in a search summary, reported a voluntary recall by Point Two of ProAir air jackets fitted with a newer trigger system, after a batch of triggers was found not to be made to the required strength and some cracked. We could not confirm the date.

Reading a recall

A recall says a product, or a batch of it, failed a standard or showed a fault. The Ovation Protege and riding vest recalls were failures against the standards named on the helmet standards and body protector pages; the saddle and stirrup recalls were about parts that could break. A recall notice does not say anything about other models from the same maker, and a product not on this page may still have been recalled. For helmets and protectors that have not been recalled, the bodies' replacement statements are on the lifespan page. Anyone hurt in a fall needs medical care.
